Geologic Maps

Geologic maps provide basic data to address natural resource and environmental issues. Data presented in these maps include, but are not limited to, surficial and bedrock geology, gravity anomalies, aquifer delineations, sand resource areas, and radon potentials. These maps are broken into four types: NJGWS Open-File Map Series (OFM), NJGWS Geologic Map Series (GMS), USGS Geologic Quadrangle Map Series (GQ), and USGS Miscellaneous Investigation Maps (I). OFM and GMS series publications are products of the New Jersey Geological Survey. OFM series publications are internally reviewed while GMS series publications are internally and externally reviewed. GQ and I series publications are products of the U.S. Geological Survey and are archived in the National Geologic Map Database (NGMDB). Search for maps by location or by list below.

  • “Geologic Offshore Maps“ – Shows a grid all of published technical geologic maps with project areas along the coast of New Jersey that span into the Atlantic Ocean or Delaware Bay.
  • “Geologic Maps with Miscellaneous Extents“ – Shows a grid of all published technical geologic maps with project areas that span across areas of varying extents within New Jersey.
  • “Geologic Statewide Maps“ – Shows a grid of all published technical geologic maps with project areas that span across the entire state of New Jersey.

Miscellaneous Investigation Maps (I)

These large-scale geologic maps of New Jersey were produced cooperatively by the U.S. Geological Survey and the New Jersey Geological Survey. This ten-year effort has resulted in the most detailed state geologic map in the nation. The Northern maps covers New Jersey north of Flemington and New Brunswick (40o30′ N latitude); the Central and Southern maps cover the remainder of the state. Bedrock Geologic Maps of Northern New Jersey and Central and Southern New Jersey are the first completely new geologic maps of the state since 1912 (revised 1950). These maps are available for purchase in hard copy for $25.

Bedrock Geologic Map of NJ 1:250,000

The Bedrock Geologic Map of New Jersey, 2014, compiled by Richard F. Dalton, Donald H. Monteverde, Peter J. Sugarman and Richard A. Volkert, is an update of a map first published just over 100 years ago, referred to as Atlas Sheet 40 , in March, 1914. The earlier Geologic Map of New Jersey by J. Volney Lewis and Henry B. Kummel has been in demand but out-of-print for many years. The original map was reprinted numerous times by State Geologists Henry B. Kümmel in 1931, Meredith E. Johnson in 1950, and finally by Kemble Widmer in the early 1960’s. Supplies of this reprinting were exhausted in 1988.

The new 1:250,000–scale map was compiled from the 1:100,000-scale digital data from the cooperative geologic mapping program between the New Jersey Geological and Water Survey and the USGS, which began in 1984, was completed with the publications of the Bedrock Geologic Map of Northern New Jersey (1996) and Bedrock Geologic Map of Central and Southern New Jersey (1998).

Questionnaire

Since 1992, New Jersey Geological and Water Survey (NJGWS) has been developing different types of geologic maps under a federal grant given annually by the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP) through a program component called STATEMAP.  These maps are made at a scale of 1:24,000 (2,000 feet to an inch) and include localized data regarding New Jersey’s surficial geology, bedrock geology, and, in more recent years, karst susceptibility. If you have used any of these geologic maps and are willing to participate, a brief survey in support of the continuation of these federal grants would be appreciated.
