Looking to hunt or trap in New Jersey? To hunt in New Jersey, you must be at least 10 years of age, have completed a hunter education course or possess a resident license from NJ or other state, or be eligible for an Apprentice Hunting License.

All hunters and trappers are required to have a license and openly display it in the middle of the back on outer clothing. License purchasers are also required to complete the NJ Child Support Certification annually.

Licenses are valid from date of purchase to December 31 of each year. License fees are subject to change.

Requirements

• Must be at least 10 years of age.
• Hunters over 10 years and under 14 years require permission from parent or legal guardian to obtain a license.
• Hunters over 10 years and under 14 years must be accompanied by licensed adult (age 21+) when hunting.

How to Obtain

• Complete the HunterCourse.com online program and print completion voucher.
• Register for an in-person mandatory live fire Hunter Education session at NJFishandWildlife.com/hunteredregistration.htm.
• Present Hunter Education course completion card at any license agent.

Requirements

• Must be at least 17 years of age.
• Must be NJ resident for at least 6 months or be on active military duty.
• Complete the Hunter Education Course, including live fire, or prior resident license from another state.

How to Obtain

• A first-time hunting license purchase must be done in-person at a license agent. Be sure to bring a Hunter Education Course Completion Card, or a prior resident hunting license from another state. All subsequent licenses can be purchased either online or at a license agent.
• U.S. citizens must provide a Social Security Number. Non-citizens must provide their passport, visa, green card, or non-U.S. driver license.
• Proof of residency required for new residents or new customers. This includes one of the following: NJ Driver License; NJ Voter Registration Card, or NJ Non-driver photo ID issued by the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission.
• Driver license is required for everyone 18 and older when using the online license system.
• A Child Support Certification must be completed annually.

Requirements

• Must be U.S. citizen and at least 18 years old to obtain an apprentice firearm license and 14 years for an apprentice bow license.
• Hunter Education NOT required for an apprentice license.
• MUST hunt under direct supervision and guidance of hunting mentor.
• Mentor must be at least 21 and possess a valid license.
• Mentor may only supervise ONE apprentice at a time.
• Lifetime limit of two apprentice licenses per type, firearm and bow.
• May hunt with air gun, bow, or shotgun ONLY.

How to Obtain

• Eligible veterans must initially be certified by NJFW staff. Certification cannot be done online or at a license agent. Click here for more information.
• Completion of Hunter Education course, including live fire, or prior resident hunting license from another state.
• Once certified, veterans can obtain licenses at license agents or online.

Requirements

• Must be active NJNG member who has completed Initial Active Duty Training.
• Appropriate Hunter Education Course Completion Cards or prior hunting license from former state of residence.
• Confirm you are active in the NJDMAVA system. Call (609) 530 6866.

How to Obtain

• National Guard members must first be certified by DMAVA. Certifications are only valid for six months at a time. Once certified, licenses and permits are available at all license agents and online.

• Must be at least 17 years of age.
• Non-resident of NJ or NJ resident for less than six months.
• Completion of Hunter Education course, including live fire, or prior resident license from another state.

Bow & Arrow Non Resident – $135.50

Non-Resident 2 Day Small Game Firearm – $36.50

(Age 16+) Not valid to hunt deer or turkey. Valid through the day after issuance.

How to Obtain

• To obtain a first-time hunting license, ensure a Hunter Education Course Completion Card or a resident license from another state is on file. Present these documents in person to a license agent or via email to NJ Hunter Education. Non-residents can find detailed instructions here.
• U.S. citizens must provide a Social Security Number. Non-citizens must provide their passport, visa, green card, or non-U.S. driver license.
• Driver license is required for everyone 18 and older when using the online license system.
• A Child Support Certification must be completed annually.

Requirements

• Completion of Hunter Education course, including live fire, or prior resident hunting license from another state.
• Valid for harvesting any species covered by the specific preserve’s license.

Resident or Non-Resident – $12.50

(Age 16+) Expires at the end of the day issued.

How to Obtain

• Valid only on commercial shooting preserves.
• Available only at participating commercial preserves.
• Show proof of Hunter Education course or prior resident hunting license from any state.

Requirements

• No license or rifle permit required for Occupant Farmer or immediate family member hunting farm on which the farmer or immediate family member RESIDE.
• Must have a Conservation Identification (CID) number.

Farm

Must meet qualifications under NJ Farmland Assessment Act of 1964. See https://www.state.nj.us/agriculture/divisions/anr/pdf/farmlandassessmentoverview.pdf.

How to Obtain

• Farmers who purchased any license or permit since 2006 should already have a CID number.
• If not, follow the instructions on page 70 of the Hunting & Trapping Digest under CID Requirement to create a profile.

Permit Fees

• Must have passed a Hunter Education course from any state that includes rifle.
• Apprentice License holders may not purchase a rifle permit.

Requirements

• Valid NJ bow or firearm hunting license.
• Permits are ZONE and SEASON SPECIFIC, valid only in the Deer Management Zone for the specific season specified on the permit.
• Valid for antlerless deer only. Hunting for antlered buck requires an additional Antlered Buck Permit.
• Permits valid for the duration of the season specified on the permit.
• Multiple permits for different Deer Management Zones may be purchased within the same season.

Single Zone Permit Bow, Permit Muzzleloader, or Permit Shotgun – Youth – $12

Requirements

• Valid NJ bow or firearm hunting license.
• MULTI-ZONE permit available for either Regulation Set 7 (zones 7,8,9,12,17,41) OR a separate permit for Regulation Set 8 (zones 10,11,13,14,15,36,49,50,51).
• Valid for antlerless deer only, for zones within the specific regulation set for the duration of season specified.
• Hunting for antlered buck requires an additional Antlered Buck Permit.

DRS Multi-Zone Permit (Permit Bow, Muzzleloader, or Shotgun) – Youth – $24

How to Obtain

• Fall permits available at license agents or online.
• Spring turkey permits are awarded through a lottery system. An application can be submitted at a license agent or online.

Requirements

• Valid NJ bow or firearm hunting license.
• Permit required to hunt during the Special Coyote & Fox Permit Season which runs from January to mid-March. No permit is needed to hunt during the regular season.
• Firearm and ammo restrictions are different for the Special Permit Season.

Coyote & Fox Permit – $2

(Age 10+) Apprentice License holders may not hunt for coyote or fox.

• Not available for purchase until mid-Dec. when new hunting license are available.

REQUIREMENTS

• Valid firearm hunting license.
• Permits are ZONE SPECIFIC, valid only in the Bear Management Zone specified on the permit.

• All hunters, including Apprentice License holders, must obtain HIP certificate before hunting ducks, geese, brant, coot, woodcock, rails, snipe or gallinules.

• Valid NJ Firearm license
• HIP Certification, NJ Waterfowl Stamp, and Federal Migratory Duck Stamp (formerly the Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp) are required—even for 16-year-olds still hunting on a youth license—to hunt brant, ducks and geese.
• Both NJ and Federal Migratory stamps must be signed in ink.

Requirements

• Must have a Conservation Identification (CID) number.
• Permit(s) must be visibly displayed on outer clothing and not covered by a pack or harness while hunting.

Farmer Permits

Qualified farmers are eligible for free deer and turkey hunting permits.

How to Obtain

• New farmers should apply June 1–Aug. 1 at county ag extension offices or online at njdepwptest.net/njfw/hunting/information-for-farmers/ under Farmer Certification Application for Deer and Turkey permits.

Requirements

• May be purchased online or replaced at any license agent. (See pages 16–17 in the Hunting & Trapping Digest.)

You can replace a license, permit, or stamp at any license agent or online at Fish and Wildlife’s internet license sales site (https://nj.aspirafocus.com/internetsales) for a $2.00 fee per item. For hunting licenses, permits, or stamps originally purchased online, a paper reprint can be made free of charge, except for all Firearm and All-Around Licenses. Durable stock duplicates can be ordered online for a $2.00 per item fee and will be mailed.
Yes, all licenses, permits, and stamps can be printed from home. However, New Jersey firearm laws require that all firearm hunting licenses (Firearm License, Apprentice Firearm License, or All-Around Sportsman License) must be printed on durable material and sent by mail. Online purchasers of these licenses may print a temporary paper license valid for 15 days from the date of purchase and use the paper license/permit until the durable material version arrives by mail. ALL licenses must be displayed regardless of the print material. Persons caught falsifying information on a license or permit will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
