The transportation sector is the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) in New Jersey (37%) and throughout the United States (28%). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of Americans driving alone to work has increased steadily each decade since 1980 and serves as the commute mode of choice for 3 out of every 4 workers.i In addition to public transportation and bicycle commuting, emission reduction solutions for commuters who drive to work must become a top priority.
The rapid growth in electric vehicle (EV) adoption requires investment in electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), more commonly referred to as EV charging stations, to meet charging infrastructure needs. Workplace charging plays a key role in facilitating EV adoption as it provides an easier and more convenient way to charge, normalizes EV commuting, and can relieve EV drivers of range anxiety.
Nearly 80% of charging is done either at home or the workplace.
If a consumer does not have access to home charging, the ability to charge at the workplace becomes a major consideration in the purchase of an EV. Additionally, many workers live in multi-unit dwellings (e.g., apartments, condos, and townhomes) with limited or no access to home charging.
Employers can help play a critical role in providing low or no-cost charging infrastructure for their employees and support their workers in a greener commute. When employees see peers driving electric, they are more likely to drive electric themselves. U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) research shows that employees who can charge at work are 6x more likely to purchase an EV!ii
Further research shows that:
- 74% of EV owners express strong interest in workplace charging.
- 60% of EV drivers need chargers at work, either because of long commutes or no access to at-home charging.
- 52% of employees believe their employers should do more for the environment.iii
- Nearly 75% of millennials— who will make up about ¾ of the workforce by 2025— are willing to take a pay cut to work for an environmentally responsible companyiv.
- 10% of survey respondents said they would even be willing to take up to a $10,000 pay cut!
- Nearly 40% of the survey’s millennial respondents have chosen a job because of company sustainability, and another 30% of all survey respondents reported having left a job in the past due to a company’s lack of sustainability planv.
- Nearly 70% of respondents said that if a company had a strong sustainability plan, it would affect their decision to stay with that company long-termvi.
