230+ acres of Liberty State Park, known as the park’s interior, has long been fenced-off and inaccessible to park visitors due to legacy industrial pollution.

Following a multi-year public engagement process develop plans for the interior, in October 2023, the Department of Environmental Protection, in partnership with the United States Army Corp of Engineers, broke ground on the initial cleanup of the area.

Once the cleanup concludes, ecological restoration projects that improve and expand access while also providing critical flood and climate resilience benefits to the surrounding developed features of the park and the neighboring communities.

Within the interior the park’s future Southern Athletics Hub will be constructed, featuring multi-use athletic fields, along with a variety of courts, where planned sporting, community and other events can take place.
