Planning Projects

Resilient NJ supports local governments to develop and implement resilience actions that address the unique needs of their communities. The program utilizes available funding sources to procure the services of qualified contractors on behalf of local governments interested in developing implementable actions to increase their resilience to climate hazards. Consultants work with municipalities to engage the community, develop products that address community needs to advance resilience actions, and assist with project implementation, most often through supporting development of grant applications for federal funding opportunities.

Regional Projects

Currently, there are four multi-municipal regions participating in Resilient NJ to develop and implement their own unique Regional Resilience and Adaptation Action Plans. These projects bring together teams of municipalities, counties, and community-based organizations with a strong emphasis on robust and meaningful community engagement throughout the process and supporting socially vulnerable populations in the project area. These projects are supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded through the National Disaster Resilience Competition, and with additional assistance through HUD CDBG-DR funding.

The regional action plans were released in October of 2022. These regions are currently pursuing implementation of projects identified in their Action Plans. Several towns within the regions have also been successful in applying and receiving additional state and federal funding as a result of work they did during their Resilient NJ planning process and continue to seek additional opportunities to further resilience in their communities.

Municipal Projects

Resilient NJ’s Municipal Assistance Program (MAP) is a technical assistance program directed at providing municipalities with support to develop municipal resilience action plans and climate change-related hazard vulnerability assessments (CCHRVA) consistent with the State’s Municipal Land Use Law (MLUL).

Projects within the MAP program are conducted using a thorough and equitable engagement process to result in municipal resilience action plans to be used by local governments to advance resilience projects in their communities. As the program expands, the Office of Climate Resilience continues to determine new and different ways to provide assistance to best meet the needs of areas all of New Jersey’s communities.
