On a continuous basis, the New Jersey Geological and Water Survey solicits applications for our internship programs. These programs can be for college credits or monetary compensation. More information on such is provided below.

 

For college credit:

The student intern program is designed for current college students who need to fulfill college requirements. These opportunities are coordinated among the Survey, the student, and the student’s academic advisor. A specific program is designed with deliverables and a timeframe. A college credit internship usually lasts the length of the college semester. A final report is prepared by the student and presented for college credit. This is an unpaid position. Most of the work will be in Ewing or Trenton, New Jersey. However there also may be statewide field work.

If interested in a student intern program position, please send your inquiries to the Survey Webmaster and include your college advisor’s contact information, number of credits required to be completed, and a copy of your resume, including expected graduation month and year. Please also include a statement, if accurate, that you have a fully valid driver’s license, issued by any USA state.

 

For Monetary compensation:

The intern hourly program is designed for a variety of persons, ranging from second-year college students to retired professionals looking to maintain knowledge in and contribution to the Earth Sciences. Participants work on a variety of projects and can gain valuable hands-on experiences. Most of the work will be in Ewing or Trenton, New Jersey. However there also may be statewide field work.

Paid interns should have some training or experience in geology, hydrogeology, water resources, physical, environmental, chemical biological, or earth sciences, geography or environmental planning, or civil, chemical, environmental, mechanical, sanitary, agricultural, mining, industrial or bio-resource engineering.

If interested in a paid intern hourly program position, please send your inquiries to the Survey Webmaster and include a statement, if accurate, that you have a fully valid driver’s license, issued in any USA state. Include your most recent resume.

• If you are a current college student, list your GPA, expected graduation month and year, your major, a list of relevant courses and references.
• If you are looking for an internship for the summer, between college years, please submit your interest to the Survey Webmaster by the end of January of that year.

The following conditions apply to a paid intern hourly position:

• Paid interns cannot work more than 900 hours in any state fiscal year (July 1 to June 30).
• Medical benefits are not provided.
• Paid interns do not work when the Survey observes Federal and State holidays.
• A person who is not a current New Jersey resident may be asked to move into the state after the first year of employment.
