Commercial Reporting

Harvester and Dealer Reporting

Accurate harvester and dealer reporting is key to fisheries management. These reports give managers insights into fisheries and help shape regulations. Timely reporting is also an important tool for quota monitored species that are worth millions of dollars to New Jersey’s economy.

Harvester Reporting

In New Jersey, every commercial harvester receives a trip reporting packet at the time of license renewal. Harvesters report monthly either by mail, fax, email, or online reporting. Reporting includes valuable data such as species harvested, gear used, and location. Harvesters report months that they did not fish as well. Many questions can be answered by reviewing the commercial trip reporting packet. New Jersey also has many harvesters that fish on federally permitted vessels, and questions about reporting can be directed to NMFS or the local port agent.

Electronic Trip Reporting for Harvesters

Electronic trip reporting is not required, but favored among commercial harvesters. Reports can be submitted by a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer quickly and efficiently. Once a report is submitted, harvesters receive an instant confirmation number and can view all reports submitted at any time. Other benefits to electronic reporting are not spending money on stamps or worrying that a report is lost. An application for electronic reporting is below along with instructions.

Dealer Reporting

Many of our bigger fisheries such as Atlantic menhaden, black sea bass, and summer flounder have a dealer reporting requirement. Many dealer reports are due weekly so that fisheries managers can determine quota amounts. Dealer reporting is completed electronically through the Standard Atlantic Fisheries Information System (SAFIS). Many questions can be answered by reviewing the commercial dealer reporting packet.
