Final Revised Risk Screening Worksheet for Long-Term Carcinogenic and Noncarcinogenic Effects and Short-Term Effects

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has finalized the revised Risk Screening Worksheet for Long-Term Carcinogenic and Noncarcinogenic Effects and Short-Term Effects (Worksheet). The use of the Worksheet in the risk assessment process is described in Section 2.0 of Technical Manual 1003, “Guidance on Preparing a Risk Assessment for Air Contaminant Emissions.” The acute and chronic sulfuryl fluoride reference concentrations proposed in the draft Worksheet have been removed. No other changes were made in the final Worksheet.

The draft revised Worksheet was issued for public comment on May 8th, 2019 with a request for comments to be submitted by June 10th, 2019. An extension for submission of comments was requested and all comments submitted were considered by the Department. A response to comment document and a fact sheet document summarizing all changes were developed and are posted on the Department’s website at https://www.state.nj.us/dep/aqpp/ under “Program Update” and at https://www.nj.gov/dep/baqp under “What’s New.” Based on comments received, the acute and chronic sulfuryl fluoride reference concentrations proposed in the draft Worksheet have been removed. Reference concentrations for sulfuryl fluoride will be proposed for public review and comment after the Department reviews California Environmental Protection Agency’s research findings, which are scheduled to be issued by early 2021, as well as any additional information and data published by recognized government or academic entities. No additional changes were made to the draft revised Worksheet based on the comments received.

The final revised Worksheet is posted at the Department’s “Risk Screening Tools” webpage, https://www.state.nj.us/dep/aqpp/risk.html. Also posted at this webpage are the updated “Revisions to the NJDEP/DAQ Risk Screening Worksheet” and the updated “Toxicity Values for Inhalation Exposure.”
