The following steps should be taken in the event of a dam incident:

  • Make sure you are in a safe location before observing the situation and report an appropriate response to the incident.
  • Typical dam incidents may include, but are not limited to:
    • Unsafe high water level or rapid loss of water in the pond or lake
    • Water overtopping the dam embankment
    • Formation of a vortex in the pond or lake
    • Any unusual cracks in the dam or sliding of dam embankment material
    • Sinkholes at the dam
    • Unusual discharge of muddy water from the dam embankment
    • Unusual obstructions in the spillway
    • Destructive vandalism
  • To report an incident, call the 24-hour notification hotline at 1-877-WARNDEP (1-877-927-6337).
  • In the event of a dam failure or uncontrolled release of stored water, High (Class I) and Significant (Class II) Hazard Dam owners must immediately activate their Emergency Action Plan (EAP) in accordance with the Safe Dam Act (N.J.S.A. 58:4-5.a.(1)).
