Continuing Education for New Jersey
Licensed Well Drillers & Pump Installers
In 2018, it became mandatory for New Jersey licensed well drillers and pump installers to begin earning continuing education points (CEPs) in order to renew their licenses. Well Permitting acts as the CEP manager and enters continuing education points submitted by course providers, well drillers, and pump installers. Submitted course applications are reviewed for administrative completeness by Well Permitting. Administratively complete applications are presented to the State Well Drillers and Pump Installers Examining and Advisory Board (Board) for review of the course material and instructor qualifications.
Courses which the Board determines are acceptable for New Jersey licensed well drillers and pump installers are assigned a point value and a point category. One hour of approved training equals one CEP, with the minimum point denomination being .5 CEPs. CEPs will either be in the Technical category or the Safety category. The CEP requirements for licensees can be found below.
Specific instructions for licensees to submit certificates to Well Permitting for previously approved courses can be found on the Course List. As a rule of thumb, the Course Provider will submit the information directly to Well Permitting within 45 days of administering the course. If there are different reporting instructions, they will be indicated on the Course List. Any questions regarding continuing education for well drillers and pump installers can be directed to wdpilicensing@njdepwptest.net.

Licensees will need to obtain CEPs in one of the following categories: technical/industry or safety.
All licensees, except those who meet the criteria of number 3 below, shall obtain CEPs to be eligible for license renewal as follows:
- On or after 4/1/2023, and every three years thereafter, all applicants for renewal licenses shall demonstrate that they have completed at least 21 CEPs within the prior three-year period:
-
- Individuals must obtain a minimum of 10 technical/industry CEPs and a minimum of four (4) safety CEPs.
- CEPs shall be obtained a minimum of 90 days prior to the license term expiration;
- Licensees who have been licensed for less than three years shall not be required to demonstrate that they have completed the required number of CEPs prior to their first license renewal. This applies to licensees who have upgraded to a higher-level license and those who obtain new licenses.
Licensees cannot carry points over from one licensing cycle to the next. Once 21 CEPs are achieved for a licensing cycle, in the proper categories, no more are needed for that cycle.
Licensee CEP totals will be updated as we receive the information from the course providers. Course providers have 45 days to send attendance information into the Well Permitting office. To view your CEP status and how many points we have recorded for you, visit the DEP DataMiner and follow these instructions:
- Under WS Well Permits, select the Continuing Education Points (Well Drillers and Pump Installers) report
- Enter your license number. Your license number is a 6- or 7-digit number with no letters in it. Using your Registration Number will not work with this report.
The Course List will be updated as new courses become available. Courses will be assigned unique identifiers. A licensed individual cannot take the same course more than once in a licensing cycle.
If you have already taken or intend to take a course that is not listed on the course list, submit a completed Course Application, with the required attachments, to wdpilicensing@njdepwptest.net. If a course provider has not obtained course approval, the licensee may submit an application for consideration of approval by the State Well Drillers and Pump Installers Examining and Advisory Board (Board) and Department. Please be advised, however, that by taking any course not yet approved you are doing so at your own risk as the course may not meet the course criteria requirements of N.J.A.C. 7:9D-1.9(g) .
The Board and Well Permitting review requests for seminars, workshops, training courses, college courses, or other means designated to fulfill the CEP requirements. Once courses are approved, they will be posted in a link above. Course providers seeking to have a course approved should fill out the Course Application (found below) and submit it either to wdpilicensing@njdepwptest.net or to the following address:
Well Permitting Section
Division of Water Supply and Geoscience
New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection
Mail Code 401-04Q
PO Box 420
Trenton, New Jersey 08625-0420
All submitted courses will be reviewed pursuant to N.J.A.C. 7:9D-1.9(g). Course provider applicants will receive written notification from the Department, upon the Board’s recommendation, of the decision to approve or deny CEPs for the course.
Well Permitting maintains a course list on this page and updates it as new courses become available. Courses will be assigned unique course numbers if approved.
All courses shall be reevaluated toward the end of the licensing cycle for which they are approved. You will be notified if your course will be accepted for the next continuing education cycle.
