Salem Generating Station (Units 1 & 2)

Salem Generating Station (Units 1 & 2) is comprised of two units that utilize pressurized water reactor technology to produce steam used as the motive force to produce electricity. The station is located on the southern half of Artificial Island in Alloways Creek Township in Salem County.  Hope Creek Generating Station occupies the northern half of the island.

Ownership of Salem Units 1 & 2 is through an agreement between PSEG Nuclear and Exelon Generation Company.  PSEG Nuclear is responsible for the operation of the units.

Salem Unit 1 has a rated output of 1228 megawatts of electricity.  Unit 1 received its full-power operating license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) on December 1, 1976.  On June 30, 2011, the NRC renewed Unit 1’s operating license.  The renewed operating license will expire on August 13, 2036.

Salem Unit 2 has a rated output of 1216 megawatts of electricity.   Unit 2 received its full-power operating license from the NRC on May 20, 1981.  On June 30, 2011, the NRC renewed Unit 2’s operating license.  The renewed operating license will expire on April 18, 2040.
