Nuclear Engineering

The BNE ensures the public is protected during normal operations and emergency events at New Jersey’s three operating and one decommissioning nuclear generating stations.  The BNE’s three sections do this by monitoring radiation in the environment around the nuclear generating station sites, staying aware of current plant operations, and being prepared to respond to an emergency.

Nuclear Generating Stations

New Jersey has two operating nuclear generating stations:  Salem (Units 1 & 2) and Hope Creek.   New Jersey also has a permanently shutdown nuclear generating station that is presently in the decommissioning process:  Oyster Creek.

Engineering Oversight

BNE staff perform engineering oversight and safety assessments through onsite observations and safety reviews of the nuclear generating stations in New Jersey.

Environmental Surveillance & Monitoring

The purpose of the ESMP is to monitor various environmental media for radioactivity that may be attributable to the operation of New Jersey’s nuclear power plants.

Emergency Preparedness

NEPS is tasked to safeguard the residents of New Jersey by maintaining a state of constant preparedness for potential nuclear emergencies that may impact the state.
