The Nuclear Engineering Section (NES) of the Bureau of Nuclear Engineering (BNE) performs engineering oversight and safety assessments through onsite observations and safety reviews of the nuclear generating stations in New Jersey. The DEP has an agreement with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to observe the NRC’s inspections at New Jersey’s nuclear generating stations. The NES performs technical reviews of nuclear generating station license changes and safety issues; maintains an understanding of the operation of the stations under normal, transient and accident conditions; assesses the operation and decommissioning of the stations in order to identify concerns before they impact the environment or affect the State’s ability to respond to a nuclear emergency; assesses the effectiveness of the NRC nuclear generating station reactor oversight process from a state perspective; and, assesses and tracks radioactive waste shipments and high level radioactive waste storage in New Jersey.
