New Jersey Offshore Wind Strategic Plan

An offshore wind project involves the construction and maintenance of a large and complex series of components, including the following key infrastructure.

• Wind turbine – captures the wind energy and generates electricity. The wind turbines are secured to the sea floor and captures the wind energy through its moving blades.
• Array cables – offshore cables which run between the turbines and collect the electrical energy.
• Offshore substation – collects the energy from the array cables and stabilizes power.
• Export cables – transfers the energy from the offshore substation to the onshore substation.
• Onshore substation – collects the energy from the export cables and transfers it to onshore grid systems.
• Onshore transmission grid – distributes the electricity to ratepayers.
