Other Insect Species


Insects are one of the largest and most diverse groups organisms on the planet.  They range in size from the tiniest thrips and aphids up to truly massive stag beetles.  They occupy any and all know habitats in NJ from ants and termites tunneling deep in to the soils to diving beetles in ponds and lakes to beetles and flies in the tops of trees.  There are 26 insect orders but some of the major groups are listed below. 

Coleoptera – Beetles

Lepdipotera – Butterflies and Moths 

Hymenoptera – Bees, Wasps, and Ants 

Diptera – Flies, Mosquitoes, and Gnats 

Orthoptera – Crickets, Grasshoppers, and Locusts 

Odonata – Dragonflies and Damselflies 

Homoptera – Aphids, Cicadas, and Leaf Hoppers 

Hemiptera – True Bugs, Backswimmers, and Water Striders 

Blattodea – Termites and Cockroaches 

Thysanoptera – Thrips
