Sisters Afield engages women of color with children, who want to learn the art of angling as a life skill; and to build a community of support for ongoing fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities. While this program focuses on women of color, all interested women with children are welcome.

Background
While national and state fishing campaigns focus on increasing the participation of women in the sport of fishing, and research shows mothers are continually looking for outdoor activities to engage their children; New Jersey Fish & Wildlife seeks to be a leader in this initiative. Sisters Afield strives to remove perceived barriers for women, focusing on women with children who come from ethnically diverse backgrounds. Generally, events are rain or shine, except where stated. Deadlines to register for each event are firm, no exceptions.

Program Overview
The goal of the program is to foster interest and gain a meaningful comfort level with fishing among women of color with children. While this program focuses on women of color, all interested women with children are welcome.

Each session has a non-refundable $100 participant fee to cover one female parent/guardian and one child (aged 7-21). Save $50 by registering for all 3 sessions for $250. There is a non-refundable $15 fee for each additional child, up to two children per one adult can participate. You will need to purchase a 2024 fishing license with Trout Stamp and register for the free Saltwater Registry for this series. Registration fees include most supplies, educational materials, and food/lodging where stated. Most sessions are rain or shine, however, call 609-947-4302 the day before in cases of inclement weather.

Meet & Greet Sign Up

April 20, 2024, 9:00 am-3:00 pm: Hook & Cook Trout! will be held at the Pequest Trout Hatchery, 605 Pequest Road, Oxford NJ 07863. This introductory session introduces trout fishing, including learning how to fillet fish. Bring water/beverage, lunch/snack, and a cooler if you plan to take fish home. Dress for the weather as this session will be outside. Severe weather will postpone to April 21, 2024.

May 17-19, 2024: Enjoy the weekend Kayak and Surf Fishing at Island Beach State Park. Friday evening check-in is at 6:30 p.m. where participants will learn to make leaders for surf fishing. Early Saturday morning, participants will kayak fish Barnegat Bay for summer flounder, bluefish and other species. After lunch, you will meet at the Interpretive Center for a surf fishing clinic in preparation for Sunday’s Governor’s Surf Fishing Tournament. Rustic overnight accommodations are part of the experience at the park. Please arrive on Friday evening with your dinner. Saturday meals and Sunday breakfast/lunch will be a group effort; details provided at the Meet & Greet. June 21-23, 2024: Sedge Island Experience introduces Barnegat Bay -New Jersey’s premiere saltwater ecosystem. You will be immersed in marsh ecology, shore angling, kayaking, clamming, and crabbing. Overnight accommodations are bunk-styled in an historic duck hunting lodge; meals are included. Bring a sleeping bag, towel and toiletries, bug spray, sunscreen, reusable water bottle, hat, extra clothing, water shoes, and your enthusiasm! The deadline to register is April 1, 2024. These are rain or shine events; however severe inclement weather may shorten or postpone sessions.
