In order to expand areas of evergreen trees for wildlife habitat, nearly 600 native Virginia pine trees (Pinus virginiana), also known as the scrub pine and Jersey pine, were planted in 2018 at Assunpink Wildlife Management Area in Mercer & Monmouth counties. In 2020, nearly 200 trees that had died since 2018 were replaced. In addition, a second area of 50 eastern red cedars, 50 eastern white pines, and nearly 400 Virginia pines were planted in 2020, with a mix of native warm season grass and pollinator species seeded in between the rows. These trees and other plants will provide food and cover for a variety of species.
