Pequest Trout Hatchery Stocking Summaries

Pequest Trout Hatchery Stocking Summaries

Beginning in 2015, only rainbow trout have been raised and stocked from the Pequest Trout Hatchery. From 1983 through 2013 the hatchery annually produced approximately 600,000 – 700,000 brook, brown and rainbow trout for the angling public. However, in the fall of 2013 a disease (Furunculosis) afflicted hatchery trout, resulting in lower numbers of fish for stocking in 2014.

One response to the situation was to convert to raising only rainbow trout which proved resistant to the disease. As in the past six years, spring production of rainbow trout has exceeded targets in both numbers and average size. The fall and winter stocking programs again had larger, 2-year old fish to stock.

The traditional spring trout stocking has been supplemented by the fall stocking program since the mid-1980s and the winter stocking program beginning in 2000. Prior to 2013, there was also a limited Sea Run Brown Trout Program. See the Trout Fishing in New Jersey page for information on year-round trout fishing in the Garden State.
