The Ocean Trawl Survey completed its first sampling of 2022 and first survey since the COVID-19 Pandemic began in March 2020. Sampling began April 9th and was completed in six days, without interruption, on April 14th. Weather conditions were ideal with seas averaging one to two feet, except for storms rolling in during the last day bringing seas to about two to three feet. Temperatures in the low 40’s. Catches were generally light, consisting of mostly spiny dogfish, skates, and horseshoe crabs.
The ocean trawl survey resumed a cooperative research initiative with Monmouth University in April. The project is focused on investigating the potential for measuring environmental DNA (eDNA) in the open ocean for use in fisheries research in relation to the affects of wind farms off the coast of New Jersey.
