(15/103) TRENTON – Three New Jersey lakes have been stocked with 2,400 landlocked salmon delivered from a Massachusetts hatchery, Commissioner Bob Martin announced today.

In the past two weeks, 1,545 salmon have been stocked in Lake Wawayanda in Passaic County’s Wawayanda State Park; 615 to Lake Aeroflex in Sussex County’s Kittatinny Valley State Park; and 240 to Tilcon Lake in Allamuchy Mountain State Park. Each salmon measures between 12 inches and 14 inches long, and weighs just under a pound.

An additional 1,200 landlocked salmon will be held over the winter at the Hackettstown Hatchery and will be stocked in April, at about 15 inches long.

“New Jersey offers exceptional fishing opportunities every fall, both for landlocked salmon and trout,” Division of Fish and Wildlife Director David Chanda said. “I encourage anglers of all ages to visit our waterways, make some memories and experience the thrill of a fresh catch.”

In return for the landlocked salmon, the Hackettstown Hatchery provided 1,800 surplus tiger muskellunge to a hatchery in Massachusetts.
The DEP’s Division of Fish and Wildlife stocked rivers, lakes and streams across New Jersey with more than 21,000 large two-year-old trout between October 13 and October 21. 
 
This year marks the ninth year of stocking landlocked salmon in New Jersey. Anglers are urged to report catches of landlocked salmon by emailing the Bureau of Freshwater Fisheries at njfwfish@njdepwptest.net and attaching pictures of their catch.

Anglers at age 16 or older must obtain a fishing license and trout stamp to fish for salmon and trout. Children under 16 and New Jersey residents 70 years and older can fish for free.
