NEW JERSEY PARTNERS WITH MARINA OPERATORS TO PROTECT WATERWAYS STATEWIDE
(05/94) BRICK TOWNSHIP – Advancing Acting Governor Codey's Coast 2005 initiative, Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Commissioner Bradley M. Campbell today kicked off the New Jersey Clean Marina program to reduce nonpoint source pollution in coastal waterways.
'"The Clean Marina program is a significant step in advancing the goals of Coast 2005," said Acting Governor Richard J. Codey. "By partnering with marina operators, local governments, and recreational boaters we are working together to protect the water on which New Jersey's maritime community depends."
"Boaters care about water quality, and marinas know that clean water is a business necessity," said Commissioner Bradley M. Campbell. "The Clean Marina program makes boaters and marine businesses full partners in Governor Codey's fight for cleaner coastal waters, by promoting common sense steps to control pollution."
The Clean Marina program offers marinas free assistance and guidance to reduce and eliminate pollution resulting from everyday operations and human practices. During wet weather pollutants including gasoline and chemicals, are carried into waterways contributing to degraded and impaired water quality.
Marinas that participate in the NJ Clean Marina Program sign a pledge to implement environmentally sound practices outlined by the program's guidebook. Clean Marina Committee representatives will be available to assist facilities with both regulatory concerns and implementation of the most effective practices.
In addition to protecting clean water and the environment, the program offers marinas benefits including State certification as a Clean Marina facility and authorized use of the official Clean Marina logo for marketing and advertising materials. Clean Marinas will receive a burgee to fly at the facility to emphasize the marina’s environmental commitment. The Clean Marina program will also highlight marinas that have met the program goals in newsletters and on the official web site.
The Clean Marina program is sponsored by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) with a grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium coordinates with the DEP to provide outreach and technical guidance to marinas including free individual assistance and educational workshops on topics from coastal hazards to public access issues.
Cooperative partners in the program include: Barnegat Bay National Estuary Program, Delaware National Estuary Program, Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve, Manasquan Watershed Management Group, Marine Trades Association, NJ Department of Transportation, Rutgers University and Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Ocean County and US Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Under Coast 2005, the state is strengthening standards and regulations to protect New Jersey’s coastal ecosystem, enhancing public access opportunities, expanding protection for coastal wildlife and sensitive habitats, while continuing to increase support of the state’s tourist, seafood and maritime industries.
New Jersey is home to over 540 boatyards, marinas and yacht clubs that house the thousands of commercial and industrial vessels which sail, motor, and explore New Jersey’s 127 miles of ocean coastline. New Jersey has the largest population density of any state, with most residents and visitors within 50 miles of coastal resources and waters. In an effort to protect coastal resources from the pressures of increased growth, New Jersey is partnering with marinas statewide to voluntarily implement environmentally sound practices and standards to address the incidental effects of boating on the state’s coastal ecosystem.
