DEP Sponsors Earth Day Challenge in State Parks and Forests

(05/46) TRENTON — The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is sponsoring the Earth Day Challenge this Saturday, April 23, calling for volunteers and organizations to take part in environmental enhancement projects in New Jersey's state parks and forests.

"This week marks the 35th anniversary of Earth Day which is celebrated nationally," said Commissioner Campbell. "You can get involved locally. Whether you clear a trail, plant a tree, or clean up a beach, your involvement on Saturday can make a difference in protecting New Jersey's precious natural resources."

New Jersey's legacy in identifying environmental problems and developing creative solutions is well documented. The DEP began managing natural resources and addressing pollution and contamination issues throughout the state since its inception. The annual celebration of Earth Day began 35 years ago on April 22, 1970, when nearly 20 million people nationwide participated in Earth Day festivities.

Earth Day marks the largest grassroots environmental movement in U.S. history. Citizen involvement on Earth Day has been the impetus for social change ranging from key federal environmental legislation to recycling in homes.

Participants in the DEP Earth Day Challenge are encouraged to wear appropriate clothing for working outdoors. Volunteers should pre-register by calling the local park office.

The Earth Day Challenge is a good opportunity to earn service hours for organizations and scouting groups.

The rain date is Sunday, April 24.
