Research at HPO

Our collections

State and federal laws restrict access to materials that contain archaeological data and other sensitive information. Only qualified consultants and researchers may request access, and by specific request only. If you qualify for access, HPO staff can provide digital copies of these survey reports and assist with basic research.

Reports in HPO’s collection were written for compliance and/or planning purposes. These reports consist of a variety of types, including but not limited to:

  • architectural and archaeological identification surveys
  • historic structure reports
  • cultural landscape reports
  • preservation plans
  • alternatives analyses
  • mitigation documentation

The Historic Property Files contain individual cultural resource hanging files for those resources included or formally determined eligible for inclusion in the New Jersey and/or National Register of historic places.

Each file contains documentation relevant to the resource’s designation status, such as:

  • National Historic Landmark forms
  • National Register nomination forms
  • Determinations of Eligibility from the Keeper of the National Register
  • SHPO Opinion letters,
  • Certification of Eligibility letters.

Files may also contain supporting documentation such as:

  • Survey forms
  • Photographs
  • Maps
  • Correspondence
  • Other documentatio

The Map Collection primarily includes a complete set of USGS Quadrangles that indicate the locations of cultural resources included or formally determined eligible for inclusion in the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places, and the locations of compliance cultural resource studies accessioned into the Report Collection. This map series was in use between c1970 and 2010, after which mapping has been included in HPO’s Cultural Resources GIS database. The Map Collection also includes planning survey base maps on a variety of map sources, as well as miscellaneous historic and contemporary local, regional, and statewide maps.

The Topical/Context Files contain general topical information collected by HPO staff for a variety of historic preservation topics, as well as research and documentation compiled in support of developing New Jersey’s statewide historic contexts.

The Reference Library is a small collection of published material including:

  • Local, regional, and statewide histories
  • Architectural histories and style guides
  • General texts on historic preservation and/or archaeological methods and practice
  • Thematic historical texts

Other collections may be available with prearranged staff assistance. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Project review files
  • Photographs

Use online public data

HPO is continually scanning its collections and modernizing its catalogs. As we ready this data for the public, we will share it through ArcGIS Online and DEP’s own DataMiner tool. At this time, we have the following data available:

LUCY Online Map Viewer

LUCY Online Map Viewer

LUCY is HPO’s online Cultural Resources Geographic Information System (CRGIS) which provides locations and data about HPO’s cultural resources inventory.

LUCY allows access to …

  • Archaeological site grids for data within 1/2-mile intervals.
  • Identified and eligible historic properties and historic districts.
  • Known survey report information for those properties and districts.
  • Public GIS data from other programs within DEP and other state agencies.

If needed, you can import data from your own files or outside services into the map as well.

Tools

Access our digital catalogs and other public data.

In addition to LUCY, we have …

  • DataMiner-based survey report catalog searches, updated daily from internal data.
  • Survey report catalog PDFs, updated periodically.
  • Known Historic Properties List PDFs, updated periodically.

Request offline data

Our collections span over half a century and are still growing. We are continuously digitizing our public materials, but not everything is available online yet. To access files not shared through DataMiner,

  1. Fill out the Data Use and Distribution Agreement Form.

  2. Email this form and a written request to our main office email.

We will then connect you with an HPO staff member who can share the requested materials through a OneDrive link.

Set up an in-person appointment

At this time, HPO does not hold regularly scheduled training and research sessions. In-person research is available by special request only. Send a message to our main office email to schedule an appointment.
