Downtown revitalization programs

Introduction

Community revitalization is not another name for urban renewal. The urban renewal of the 20th century destroyed large swathes of communities. Revitalization programs, on the other hand, protect and support existing neighborhoods. Historic preservation funding opens up further funding opportunities for downtown projects. Communities gain access to state and federal funding for their economic projects.

A vibrant historical downtown can form the backbone of a heritage tourism program, too. This spurs further economic growth by draws customers to local businesses. Moreover, it encourages downtown activities and events, drawing both residents and visitors.

The following programs all support local historic downtowns but with different scopes. Most commonly, they offer assistance, education, promotional exposure and networking among peers. Visit each program’s site for further information about their criteria and application processes. Some programs use paid memberships, but they may still offer free materials.

Main Street New Jersey

Main Street New Jersey (MSNJ) focuses on traditional business districts in New Jersey. It promotes preservation-aware economic redevelopment in participating neighborhoods and communities. Members can access technical assistance and training supported by years of successful projects. They learn how to organize citizens and other resources towards a stronger downtown community.

MSNJ values four points:

  1. Organization-civic value
  2. Economic vitality-economic value
  3. Design-place value
  4. Promotion-social value

Some of the benefits of joining this program include:

  • Training programs for volunteers and executive directors, including advanced training on targeted subjects.
  • Access to publications for further guidance.
  • Municipal government access to professional consultants for tailoring the program to the community’s strengths.
  • Guidance and promotional assistance to local businesses, including architectural design services.
  • Networking opportunities with fellow community members.

Main Street New Jersey is part of the Department of Community Affairs (DCA).

Community Collaboration Initiative

The Community Collaboration Initiative (CCI) supports New Jersey’s most distressed communities. CCI identifies these communities, then designates a CCI Liaison to embed within each. These Liaisons help shoulder the burden of coordinating with many programs across DEP. In turn, residents benefit from this collaboration’s products, including a higher quality of life.

This program is a collaboration between the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA).
