The nine-mile stretch will be developed for outdoor recreation and transportation amenities in phases. The initial construction of the Greenway will be roughly 0.8 miles in Newark, running from Branch Brook Park to Broadway.

DEP plans on developing this initial segment through a series of connected experiences, focusing on a combination of active and passive recreation opportunities. This stretch of land includes one overlook into Branch Brook Park and two community hubs, connected by a meandering, multi-modal trail.

  • The Branch Brook Park Overlook – featuring views of Branch Brook Park with lawn and picnic space.
  • The Tiffany Manor Hub – a gathering space with seating and opportunities for food trucks and other short-term amenities
  • The Newark Central Hub – which includes ADA accessible play features, performance space, sports courts and restrooms.

On Nov. 13, 2024, the DEP hosted an open house-style event in the cafeteria of Park Elementary School in Newark, to present design plans for the inaugural section of the Greenway, which will stretch nearly one mile from Branch Brook Park to Broadway in Newark. The boards presented at the open house can be viewed online by clicking here.
