Council Application

More information about the New Jersey Trails Council, including roles, responsibilities, and a current list of vacancies may be found at the New Jersey Trails Council website. Please refer to the New Jersey Trails Council representative positions and position requirements prior to preparing and submitting an application. Members of the New Jersey Trails Council serve at the pleasure of the Commissioner and may be excused by the Commissioner with or without cause. Members shall not be compensated by the DEP or the State for their service on the Trails Council unless such service is attendant to their preexisting State employment. The following documents must be submitted with a completed application to be considered for DEP and NJTC review:
  1. A letter of interest that clearly states the applicant’s:
    • Name
    • Trails Council representative position that the applicant is applying to
    • Affiliation of the applicant with any organizations that are relevant to the position, and
    • The specific attributes and experience that qualify the applicant for service on the New Jersey Trails Council regarding the representative position for which they are applying.
  2. A current resume of the applicant
  3. Two letters of recommendation from any of the following:
    • Representative of a nonprofit organization of a trail user group, community group, or outdoor recreation and conservation organization in New Jersey
    • State or local elected official or employee
    • Current or former NJDEP or NJDOT employee, or employee of another State agency

Notice: This form is to apply to be recommended to the Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection for appointment to the New Jersey Trails Council. The New Jersey Trails Council acts as an advisory body to the Department. Appointments to the New Jersey Trails Council are made by the Commissioner. Personal information collected will be used for administrative purposes and may be provided to requesters to the extent required by New Jersey’s Open Public Records Act (P.L. 2001, c. 404).

8. In a typical year, New Jersey Trails Council members meet four times per year (one full-day in-person meeting and generally three two-hour virtual meetings). Additional meetings may be scheduled as needed. Trails Council membership will also require time spent reviewing materials and participating in committees (via virtual meetings and email).     Once received, the New Jersey Trails Program will acknowledge and review applications for vacant positions. The Trails Program will email qualified applicants who submitted administratively complete applications, requesting confirmation of interest prior to advancing the applications to the NJTC for review. The NJTC will submit recommendations for nomination to the Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) for review and approval. Applications for reappointment by current NJTC members will be reviewed by the New Jersey Trails Program and, if recommended, by the Commissioner. The Commissioner will make all final determinations for appointees. Considerations for NJTC membership appointment recommendations may include, but are not limited to:
    • Qualifications
    • NJTC vacancies
    • Current NJTC membership
    • Diversity (geographic, ethnic, race, gender, etc)
    • Other relevant factors based on the Federal Recreational Trails Program (refer to 23 U.S.C. 206)
    The NJTC and/or NJDEP may request to interview applicants prior to recommending for appointment.
