Green Acres Success Stories
Gunning Island, Rumson Borough, Monmouth County
Green Acres funding was used to preserve 19 acres in Rumson Borough, Monmouth County. This property, locally known as Gunning Island, is located at the mouth of the Shrewsbury River. The property was preserved through a joint acquisition effort by the Trust for Public Land (TPL) and Rumson Borough using grant Green Acres grant funds, Monmouth County’s Grant Program, and a $1.025 million grant through the Federal National and Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal and Estuarine Land Preservation Program. This coastal island estuarine habitat contains upland and existing salt marsh and mudflats. There is a planned restoration project that would enhance the diversified habitats that would provide foraging and breeding grounds for a variety of bird species. Rumson Borough expects to manage this property as a wildlife preserve that would be accessible to kayakers, canoeists and birders, with the development of an internal hiking loop trail.
