Stormwater Utility Maintenance Jobs Training
Maintenance training for stormwater utility workers covers a range of infrastructure types and may be more varied and complex than training for other maintenance jobs. Two critical functions of stormwater utilities are to prioritize stormwater system maintenance needs, and to create a fee system to fund such stormwater system maintenance and improvement. The first function involves inspection and cataloging condition, which usually requires training. The second function provides funding for expanded stormwater system maintenance, with staff possessing broader knowledge of maintenance procedures for both gray and green stormwater systems which also usually requires additional training.
However, in addition to the stormwater maintenance training needs identified above, stormwater utilities can and often do perform services for several towns, or at the county level, which typically translates into a need to be familiar with a wider array of green and gray stormwater infrastructure designs and linked functionality between stormwater installations. This is especially true when stormwater system improvements or designs are sensitive to watershed hydrology, and varying infiltration, runoff, and riparian conditions.

New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) provides stormwater training presentations, videos, and links to reference material that will aid in the implementation of a stormwater maintenance program and provide assistance in meeting conditions of New Jersey’s Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4s) permits.
NJ Stormwater Best Management Practices Manual, Chapter 8: Maintenance of Stormwater Management Measures provides information and guidance on developing formal maintenance plans, which are required for major development project approvals in New Jersey per Stormwater Management rules at N.J.A.C. 7:8-5.8.
Also, several guides to stormwater operations and maintenance are available on the web that address a wide range of infrastructure types, and that are sensitive to Low Impact Designs and watershed hydrology. One excellent example of such information is provided by American Rivers.
