Rebuild by Design Meadowlands

Rebuild By Design Meadowlands

On June 2, 2014, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced that a design concept for the Meadowlands area near Little Ferry, Teterboro, Moonachie, South Hackensack, and Carlstadt was selected as a winner of HUD’s Rebuild by Design competition.  To fund this project, HUD has allocated $150 million towards the design and construction of a solution that will reduce flooding risks and enhance resiliency in this area. Information regarding the NJ Department of Environmental Protection’s timeline of the design and construction of this project is available in the October 16, 2014 Federal Register . Additional information on the DEP’s public outreach will be available on this site.

Current Project Status:

NJDEP’s Bureau of Flood Engineering and Climate Resilience Design completed a feasibility study and environmental impact statement for the Rebuild by Design Meadowlands project. This work identifies flood- risk reduction approaches that aim to reduce the impacts of moderate and heavy rainfall events and improve flood resilience in the five-town project area in the Meadowlands Region – Carlstadt, Little Ferry, Moonachie, South Hackensack and Teterboro. The components of the Rebuild by Design Meadowlands Project are in design and include two pump stations, channel improvements, green infrastructure type improvements and a park. The green infrastructure type improvements and park will be constructed only if additional funding becomes available. The first Rebuild by Design Meadowlands project construction contract will be the Liberty Street Pump Station and Force Main project in Little Ferry.
