Sisters Afield Sedge Island Experience

July 18 @ 1:00 pm - July 20 @ 1:00 pm

A great way to introduce women with children to fishing is through the Sisters Afield Initiative. Sisters Afield teaches women of color with their children the art of angling as a life skill; and to build a community of support for ongoing fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities. While this program focuses on women of color, all interested women with children are welcome.

About the Program: Join NJDEP Fish and Wildlife’s Sisters Afield Program for the Sedge Island Experience. This weekend program will immerse you and your child in New Jersey’s salt marshes. Through hands-on activities including, back bay fishing, kayaking, clamming, and more, you’ll learn about the importance of salt marshes.

The program will start at 1:00 p.m. on July 18 and wrap-up on July 20 at 1:00 p.m.

Facility: The Sedge Island Natural Resource Education Center is a rustic, renovated duck hunting lodge situated on an island, a mile from Island Beach State Park, in Barnegat Bay. It is now used as a residential environmental education facility. There are amenities that will help make the overnight workshop comfortable – like composting toilets, running water, common room, dining room, and fans. There are six bunk rooms that participants will be paired up to share. Please note there is no air conditioning but there are fans throughout the house.

To Apply: Complete the online Application .

Workshop Fee: $100 participant fee that covers one female parent/guardian and one child (aged 10 and up). There is a $15 fee for each additional child, up to two children per one adult. The costs covers lodging, meals, equipment, tackle and bait.
