Liberty State Park – Open House on the LSP-South (Phase 2) Master Plan
May 11, 2024 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection will host the third in a series of open house-style events focused on the Liberty State Park Revitalization Program on Saturday, May 11. The open house will focus on Phase 2 of the Revitalization Program which develops a long-term master plan for Liberty State Park’s southern and waterfront areas.
The open house will be held 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the waiting room of the Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal Building located at 1 Audrey Zapp Drive, Jersey City. Commissioner LaTourette will deliver remarks in the concourse area of the train shed, located directly behind the Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal, before doors open to the waiting room.
Open House Details:
The public will have an opportunity to view posters showing concepts for Phase 2, provide their comments and ask staff questions. In addition, attendees will be able to participate in several interactive tabletop exercises.
Prior to the open house, interested stakeholders are asked to take part in an online survey which asks various questions about the park’s southern area and waterfront: njdepwptest.net/revitalizelsp/comment/. The feedback received at the open house and through the survey will help guide development of the final master plan.
Background on Phase 2 of the Revitalization Program:
Phase 2 of the Revitalization Program involves the creation of a holistic long-term Master Plan for the southern and waterfront areas of Liberty State Park. Included in the Phase 2 Master Plan is the Southern Athletics Hub, 50 acres set aside in the park’s long fenced off interior area for active recreation. Initial concepts include multipurpose fields, a track and field complex, a cricket field, court and racquet sports such as basketball and pickleball and adventure sports, including skateboarding, among others. Other active recreation amenities for the park will be included in the Northern Athletics Hub outlined in Phase 1B of the Revitalization Program.
Additionally, the Phase 2 Master Plan will ensure connectivity between all aspects of the Revitalization Program including Phase 1A, the parks interior section, and Phase 1B, the parks northern area along the Audrey Zapp Drive corridor.
Liberty State Park Revitalization Program History:
Last May, Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette advanced the Liberty State Park Revitalization Program with an initial open house event showcasing plans for Phase 1A – the cleanup and restoration of the long fenced off interior area of the park. A groundbreaking ceremony for Phase 1A was later held in October alongside a second open house event focused on Phase 1B – Liberty State Park’s northern area and immediate active recreation, arts and culture improvements.
