Septic Systems
Individual subsurface sewage disposal systems (i.e. septic systems), which are low volume residential or commercial (2,000 gallons per day or less) onsite wastewater treatment and disposal systems, are regulated under the Standards for Individual Subsurface Sewage Disposal Systems (N.J.A.C. 7:9A) and fall under the jurisdiction of the local administrative authorities (i.e. health departments). The ground water unit within the Division’s Bureau of Ground Water, Residuals, and Permit Administration provides guidance to the health departments on the implementation of the Standards and issues treatment works approvals (TWA) for system designs that cannot conform with the applicable standards.
