PFAS Source Evaluation and Reduction Requirements

There are currently 17 Delegated Local Agencies (DLA) in New Jersey. The Division of Water Quality worked with DLAs to survey their significant indirect users to determine potential sources of PFAS that may be discharged into their systems.

On April 22, 2021, the Division sent a Request for Information letter to all DLAs. The DLAs were required to issue the PFAS Source Evaluation and Reduction Requirements Survey to their significant indirect users and collect and summarize their responses. The intent of the survey was to gather general information regarding the storage, use, and/or handling of chemicals, process aids, or other products that contain PFAS. Found below are the Request for Information and survey questions sent to DLAs. The attached FAQ document was provided to the DLAs to guide their users with completion of the survey.

The Division has determined that additional information is needed to further its efforts to reduce and eliminate sources of PFAS to publicly owned wastewater treatment plants. As such, a Request for Information was issued on January 13, 2025, to the 17 DLAs. The Request for Information required DLAs to take quarterly samples of influent, effluent, and residuals and analyze for the presence of 40 PFAS. The Request for Information is below for reference.
