ISLES, INC: GOTrenton! eMobility Pilot

Project

Isles will implement an eMobility pilot program, GOTrenton!, to serve low-income and vulnerable populations in the City of Trenton through carshare, rideshare, and shuttle services. GOTrenton! is a collaborative, electric mobility solution that will improve resident access to jobs, healthcare, food shopping, social services, and new opportunities for everyone who lives, works, and plays in Trenton. In addition to expanding low-cost transportation options for low-income communities, the program will work to reduce the disproportionate asthma rates and healthcare costs by reducing dependence on private-vehicle ownership and lowering greenhouse gases and air pollution. GOTrenton! will be one of the first subsidized carshare and rideshare efforts in the country to serve low-income and environmental justice communities.

JERSEY CITY: Via Jersey City Fleet Electrification

Project

The City of Jersey City, in partnership with Via, will continue transitioning the fleet of their existing on-demand transit service to electric vehicles. Via Jersey City launched in February 2020 with a fleet that included electric vehicles. Recognizing that the City’s central wards are already well-served by transit, Via designed an innovative service model: riders may book trips to or from these wards, but not within them. This model helps limit the replication of trips that can be served by PATH, light rail, and existing bus routes, ensuring that Via Jersey City complements — rather than competes with — existing options.

The service provides over 2,000 daily rides and 13,000 weekly rides, and has unlocked access to social, economic, and cultural opportunities for riders. Surveys show that the majority of residents who use the service make less than $50,000 annually and live in neighborhoods with less fixed-route transit access. Additionally, 40% of service trips start or end within 300 hundred feet of affordable housing units.

ZAPP ELECTRIC INC: DCFC hubs in Greater Newark and Camden

Project

Zapp will be installing Direct Current Fast Charging hubs in the greater Newark and Camden areas to support their all-electric rideshare fleets and offer charging solutions for drivers working through Transportation Network Companies (TNC) like Uber and Lyft. They plan to hire drivers living in the immediate areas to operate their fleets, with priority on military veterans. Zapp found that many of these potential drivers live in multi-unit dwellings and do not have access to overnight charging. Providing electric vehicles and charging for TNC drivers will also give residents who rely on public transportation additional mobility options to support their access to employment, education, healthcare, and other daily commuting needs.
