STEPHEN MILGROM

Why is serving on the Clean Air Council important to you: First, economic development and environmental justice have to go together. When we take the time to strategize about where and how a company should build their facilities, it is good for our economy. Children who develop asthma because of air quality caused by a factory that is built in the wrong place, is tragic and it costs us all in the long run. Second, I believe that the council has the best interest of the State as well as the businesses community in the State. The diversity of interests on the council helps to ensure positive outcomes and encourages fair legislative action and regulations. In my opinion, when developers and businesses understand where the environmental community stands, it makes decision making easier not harder. Most businesses want to do the right thing. What I learn from the council I share with my constituent companies.

Why is serving on the Clean Air Council important to you?: Serving on the Clean Air Council allows me to contribute to the improvement of New Jersey’s air quality, and assist the Commissioner of NJDEP in developing policies which will continue that improvement well into the future. The Council has produced many reports on a variety of timely air quality issues directly impacting New Jersey citizens. Many of our recommendations have been incorporated into clean air policies and influenced new legislation. I am fortunate to have been involved in this important work.

New Jersey has done much to improve air quality in the past several decades. Much more needs to be done, particularly to protect our most vulnerable citizens, while at the same time advancing our economy in the State. These issues are complex, evolving, and influenced by so many factors, such as the policies of our upwind state neighbors. I am afforded a great opportunity to work with the best NJDEP staff, as well as Council colleagues from a variety of backgrounds, to work on these extremely important clean air issues.
