2006 winners

New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Commissioner Lisa P. Jackson honored environmental leaders at a ceremony November 29, 2006 announcing this year’s Environmental Excellence Awards winners. Winners were judged on the basis of documented environmental benefits, innovation, and long-term impacts of their work in the environmental field. The award categories included achievements in Environmental Education, Clean Air, Clean and Plentiful Water, Safe and Healthy Communities, Land Conservation, Healthy Ecosystems, Innovative Technology, and Environmental Leadership. The 2006 New Jersey Environmental Excellence Awards were presented to the following groups and individuals:

Clean Air Category

Winner: Global Pharmaceutical Supply Group – Subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson

Global Pharmaceutical Supply Group won recognition for their efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in New Jersey. GPSG has been instrumental in supporting the J&J Climate Friendly Energy Policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This voluntary policy was established in 2003 and set goals to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to 7 percent below 1990 levels by the year 2010. These emission reductions are achieved through using state-of-the art energy conservation technologies, solar power, green power purchasing and Renewable Energy Certificates.

Environmental Education/Student Led Activity Category

Winner: Dave Crawford, 7th Grade Science Teacher Egg Harbor Township Middle School

This project was recognized in the Environmental Education/Student Led Activity Category for their Adopt-a-Stream Catawba Project designed to teach children the importance of protecting New Jersey’s water resources and creating a sense of awareness and stewardship among Egg Harbor Township Middles School students. Since its inception, the project has grown to include neighboring school districts and Richard Stockton College of NJ. It has also attracted the attention of the television show, Animal Planet and N.J.N. Public Television’s, Classroom Close-UP.

Clean & Plentiful Water Category

NJDEP Commissioner Lisa Jackson awards the Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award for contributions to Clean & Plentiful Water to Donald Correll, President & CEO of American Water-Applied Water Management of Hillsborough for its beneficial reuse of reclaimed water at the Homestead Development in Mansfield Township.

Winner: American Water-Applied Water Management

American Water-Applied Water Management of Hillsborough, New Jersey, won for their project involving the beneficial reuse of reclaimed water at the Homestead Development in Mansfield Township. This project was the first in New Jersey involving a residential application of reclaimed water for irrigation purposes.

Environmental Leadership Category

Winner: Reverend Fletcher Harper, Executive Director of GreenFaith

The Reverend Fletcher Harper won in the Environmental Leadership Award Category for his impassioned and comprehensive environmental leadership in the areas of clean energy, energy conservation, green building, water conservation and continued commitment in promoting environmental protection to the faith-based community. Reverend Harper’s Lighting the Way Project resulted in the installation of solar arrays at 20 religious sites in NJ.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Winner: Dr. Kevin Lyons, Director of Purchasing Rutgers University

Sharing the Environmental Leadership Award is Dr. Kevin Lyons who is recognized for his applied research on developing and integrating global environmental, social, economic and ethical criteria and data into the supply chain procurement efforts at Rutgers University. His work includes developing new and innovative research and techniques to integrate the largest range of environmentally responsible criteria into all commodities, products and services developed by industry and at the University.

Healthy Ecosystems Category

Winner: New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium Habitat Initiative Project

The New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium Habitat Initiative Project won in the Healthy Ecosystems Category for their ongoing initiative to help make New Jersey a national leader in wetlands restoration ecology, developing wetlands restoration principles, and contributions to science-based wetlands management policy standards. The New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium Habitat Initiative Project has been instrumental in the successful restoration, enhancement and/or preservation of over 20,000 acres of estuarine habitat on Delaware Bay.

Innovative Technology Category

Winner: Wayne Auto Spa Acquisition, LLC

By treating and recycling water, utilizing solar power and using only biodegradable soaps, Wayne Auto Spa’s green practices prevent pollution, conserve resources and create clean energy. In other innovative practices, Wayne Auto Spa also produces energy from using used motor oil as fuel to produce heat for the facility and has replaced a number of paved areas with grass and plants to minimize stormwater run-off. Using a comprehensive green is good for small business philosophy, Wayne Auto Spa has set a precedent for the car wash/quick lube industry in New Jersey.

Land Conservation Category

Winner: Freeholder John C. Bartlett, Jr. & The Ocean County Natural Lands Trust Fund

The Ocean County Natural Lands Trust was created to acquire and maintain lands for the purposes of preserving and protecting environmentally sensitive lands, natural areas and open spaces, and preserving farmland. The National Lands Trust Fund Program supplements the on-going effort of Federal, State, County and municipal programs of providing parkland, active recreational opportunities and open space. Since its inception in 1997 the Ocean County Natural Lands Trust program has preserved over 5,525 areas of land. Ocean County Freeholder John C. Bartlett, Jr. has been instrumental in the program’s success.

Safe & Healthy Communities Category

Winner: BASF Corporation’s Better Home Better Planet: Near Zero Energy House Project

In the spring of 2006, BASF Corp. launched The BASF Better Home, Better Planet: Near Zero Energy Home-Paterson, NJ as a living classroom about homes that are 80% more energy efficient, fortified against natural disasters, affordable, kinder to the environment and faster to build. The home has been successful in demonstrating to a broad audience the power of coupling advancements in building science with programs like the New Jersey Solar Rebate Program. Also, following the construction and demonstration phases of the project, the home is scheduled to be turned over to St. Michael’s Housing Authority in Paterson for Richard Sosa, a quadriplegic boy, and his family to occupy.
