New Jersey Department of Agriculture
Aquatic Farmers License (AFL)
- The Aquatic Farmer License provides proof of ownership and possession of the species being cultivated.
- It is strongly recommended that all shellfish farmers, even those with lower levels of production, obtain a license.
- All producers of cultured aquatic stock who anticipate production worth $2,500 or more annually need to obtain an Aquatic Farmer License.
- An Aquatic Farmer must possess an AFL to participate in the Jersey Seafood Marketing Program hosted by the NJDA.
- All applicants must show that he or she possesses all State and Federal permits and approvals required for the operations and activities of the aquatic farm.
During the process of applying for the AFL, and review of required approvals, the Office of Aquaculture Coordination in the NJDA will provide technical assistance to applicants, as needed. Before applying for the AFL, potential aquatic farmers are encouraged to contact the Office of Aquaculture Coordination to discuss their project and potential approvals required.
